Criteria for Designation - Arnprior MHC
(adopted by Arnprior Town Council September, 2002)

Under the Ontario Heritage Act, a municipality must declare " reasons for designation " when declaring a property to be of ‘ historic and/or architectural value ‘ under the Act.

Each Committee must create a framework of " reasons for designation " to guide the choice of properties or areas designated in a municipality. These criteria will be based on advice and literature provided by the Ontario Ministry of Culture and other MHCs in the province.

Reasons for designation -  A property may be considered worthy for designation for some of the following reasons:

  • an historical association with a well-known event, person or group;
  • a first or formative aspect of an historic activity or trend
  • an activity or endeavour of relative antiquity
  • an activity of substantial duration
  • and an activity or endeavour that affected a substantial population of geographic area
ARCHITECTURAL REASONS:

Reference must be made to specific architectural elements. The following refer to specific exterior elements:

  • building envelope including the plan, scale, form, style, roof and facades
  • windows, doors, chimneys and porches
  • sympathetic alterations or later additions of significant note
  • missing elements with documentation or evidence
